First, the road to green development of coatings


Because the traditional solvent-based paint contains a lot of organic solvents, it not only pollutes the environment, harms people's health, but also has flammable and explosive safety hazards, and has also led to many major casualties, so the research and development of petrochemical water-based paint came into being.




1. In 2006, Maoming Petrochemical, together with South China University of Technology and Guangzhou Jitai Industry-University-Research, took the lead in developing waterborne epoxy antistatic anticorrosive paint for storage tanks.


In 2007, the product passed the technical performance test and was tried out in 804#5000 vertical gasoline tank of Maoming Petrochemical Refinery Branch. After two years of operation, the tank was opened and accepted, and all indexes met the requirements of tank protection, with good anti-corrosion effect.




In July, 2009, the product passed the appraisal of scientific and technological achievements organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Sinopec, and it was considered that "the product is safe, environmentally friendly and pollution-free, and it is at the international advanced level, filling the gap of domestic water-based environmental protection coatings". This product was jointly declared with Sinopec and won the national invention patent.




After seven years' research and application in Maoming Petrochemical Company, the performance of water-based paint has been continuously improved, and its application scope has been gradually expanded, from inside to outside the tank, and then from the storage tank to the device and pipe gallery. The product categories are constantly improving. Besides the water-borne epoxy oil-resistant antistatic and oil-resistant insulating anticorrosive paint in storage tanks, water-borne modified acrylic primer and modified silicone topcoat have been developed. Waterborne acrylic thermal insulation primer, intermediate paint and topcoat; Waterborne epoxy zinc-rich primer, inorganic zinc-rich primer, epoxy micaceous iron oxide intermediate and polyurethane topcoat; Waterborne ceramic particle thermal insulation paint and thermal insulation paint cover the corrosion protection of the external surface of storage tanks, devices, pipe gallery steel structures and pipelines, and realize the full coverage of corrosion protection of petrochemical normal temperature equipment.




2. In 2016, Sinopec Physical Equipment Headquarters included water-based paint in the annual framework bidding, and water-based paint was rapidly promoted. From the scientific research project in 2006 to the appraisal of Sinopec's scientific and technological achievements in 2009, after seven years of application practice, based on full investigation and certification, the water-based paint was separately included in the annual framework bidding in 2016. Since then, "green environmental protection paint" has officially entered the procurement platform of Sinopec, and the water-based paint has been applied from Maoming to Sinopec, which has been rapidly promoted in major enterprises of Sinopec, especially in the field of storage tank corrosion protection with the highest requirements for safety and environmental protection.




3. In 2017, waterborne anticorrosive paint was included in "GB/T50393-2017 Technical Standard for Corrosion Protection Engineering of Steel Petroleum Storage Tanks".


Since then, the water-based anticorrosive paint has been well-documented in the petrochemical system, and its application scope has continuously stepped up to a new level, from storage tanks to equipment pipe corridors (lines), from routine inspection and maintenance to large-scale new projects, and from Sinopec to PetroChina, Sinochem Group, national pipe network and local oil refining, port storage and transportation groups, etc.




According to statistics, before 2016, the adoption ratio of environmental protection coatings was basically zero, and then it increased year by year, accounting for more than 20% in 2021. Among them, in the routine inspection and maintenance procurement of crude oil tanks and refined oil tanks, water-based paints accounted for more than 70% of the same kind. Water-based anticorrosive paint is used for inspection and maintenance, as well as reconstruction, expansion and new construction projects.




In recent two years, a number of large-scale crude oil storage depot construction and equipment renovation and expansion projects have been launched. With the good performance in inspection and maintenance projects for more than ten years, waterborne anticorrosive paint has been applied in a number of new projects, and the anticorrosion supporting facilities and technical services provided have been recognized by the owners and construction units, providing a guarantee for the one-time inspection of the projects.




The newly-built crude oil depots with water-based paints as the main components are: Sinopec Tianjin Nangang 3.2 million cubic meters crude oil depot, Xinjiang Kuqa 800,000 cubic meters crude oil depot, Yueyang 800,000 cubic meters crude oil depot, Maoming 1.6 million cubic meters crude oil depot, Gulei 1.6 million cubic meters crude oil depot and Rizhao 5 million cubic meters crude oil depot; China National Petroleum Corporation Jieyang Base has 5 million cubic meters of crude oil storage, etc. There are also Hubei Sales Company/Shiyan Bailang Oil Depot Upgrade and Reconstruction Project, Jingzhou Oil Depot Relocation Project, South China Sales Company/Maoming First Station Phase II Storage Tank Expansion Project, etc.




New construction, renovation and expansion projects of the plant include: 1.2 million tons/year ethylene project in Nangang, Tianjin Petrochemical Company, product adjustment and oil upgrading project in Refinery Department, 200,000 tons of polypropylene plant in Olefin Department, 400,000 tons/year ethylbenzene/styrene production project from crude pyrolysis gas in Maoming Petrochemical Company, and new pipelines supporting the refinery unit.




Second, the road to intelligent development of coatings


After entering the 21st century, due to the needs of environmental protection, energy saving and production efficiency, and with the continuous development of computer technology and mechanical manufacturing technology, intelligent integrated coating production line has become a new trend in the development of production equipment in coating factories.

The intelligent integrated paint production line changes the shortcomings of traditional paint production equipment, such as dispersion, environmental protection and low efficiency. It adopts advanced automatic control technology to perfectly combine the whole process of raw materials feeding, metering, dispersion, grinding, paint mixing, filtering and automatic packaging with modern technological process, and now it is fully automatic.




The whole production process is completely closed, efficient and environmentally friendly. It is operated by industrial computer, which can produce control pictures that meet different users' needs according to different processes, monitor the production process in real time, record the process, make production reports and other functions, effectively improving the accuracy of production process and the traceability of product quality.




Take Core Chemistry as an example. In 2019, its fully automatic production line was successfully put into production. The factory covers an area of nearly 144 mu, and the approved production capacity of environmental protection assessment is 118,800 tons. The project involves dispersant, thixotropic agent, fluorosilicone polymer, filter cake, color paste, etc. The annual production capacity is expected to reach more than 10,000 tons. Core chemistry always adheres to the concept of giving priority to ecological protection, scientific organization and fine management. Now the factory has fully realized PLC control (Longnan factory has fully implemented PLC automation control), from the initial manual recording of raw materials, products in and out of the warehouse and capital inflow to the present ERP. And in order to better improve the management system, the company specially hired professional management companies to settle in the company for management guidance. The factory took the lead in passing GB/T24001 environmental management system certification, ISO 9001: 2008 international quality management system and GB/T28001 occupational health and safety management system certification.
